MAGic / MAGic Deluxe User's Guide Rev. 1.32 Getting Started
──────────────────────────────────────────────
Before we get into the details of MAGic and MAGic Deluxe, you will need to
know the "basics" on how to control MAGic during this presentation. If you
haven't hit a key yet, you are reviewing this in Smooth Panning Mode. You
are now in the COMMAND Mode of MAGic. Normally you would enter this mode by
hitting the <5> key on the Numeric KeyPad (making sure that NumLock is off).
You may enter and exit Panning Mode by hitting the <SpaceBar>. Try it right
now! If you missed anything, hit the <SpaceBar> to stop Panning and use the
<Arrow Keys> to move around and hit <SpaceBar> again to restart. <F> or <S>
will control panning speed while panning. If you hit <Enter> while panning,
it will restart at the next line to allow for short lines of text. If you hit
<Enter> while you are in COMMAND Mode and NOT panning, MAGic will exit COMMAND
Mode and go to Type-Thru Mode. Simply hit the <NumPad 5> to re-enter COMMAND
Mode and then <SpaceBar> to pan or the <Arrow Keys> to position. You might
prefer to review this information in MSI's unique STACKED Mode. Press the
<SpaceBar> now (if panning) and hit the <+> key for STACKED viewing. You will
notice that text is stacked, eliminating the need to pan. Hit the <+> again,
and it will resume BOX Mode. You are now controlling this presentation, as you
would operate in any word processor. When you get to the end of any page, press
the <SpaceBar> to stop panning, the <Enter> to exit COMMAND Mode, the <PgDn> to
go to the next page, <NumPad 5> to re-enter COMMAND Mode, and the <SpaceBar> to
resume panning. Now, onto the "Operation of MAGic" or <Esc> <Esc> to exit ...

This guide documents MAGic (MAGnification In Color) and MAGic Deluxe. MAGic
is a software solution which provides 1.2, 1.4 & 2x text magnification, 2x
graphics magnification, 10 dynamic "bookmarks" and much more ── in less than
10 KBytes of memory!! MAGic is compatible with DOS and Windows programs
running on PCs equipped with VGA, XGA, or SVGA video systems.
MAGic Deluxe adds 4, 6, 8 and 12 text screen magnification and a magnification
locator display ─ all in under 15 KBytes of overhead!
The MAGic and MAGic Deluxe demos operate unrestricted for 30 minutes. Once
you have experienced its power and ease-of-use, you can register your demo
copy via telephone. Microsystems Software can be contacted at 508/879-9000.
NOTE: After 30 minutes, the DEMO version will no longer be accessible. To
re-load the MAGic demo, you MUST re-boot your PC, then re-load

This section describes the process of loading, unloading and operating MAGic.
If you have not already installed MAGic, please refer to Section 2 ─
Installation and Registration.
Loading MAGic
If you instructed INSTALL to automatically load MAGic whenever your PC is
reset, MAGic will always be running in the background mode and can be
accessed at any time, without exiting your application programs. If you did
not instruct MAGic to automatically load, you can load it now by inputting
the following from the DOS prompt:
MAGIC <Enter>
Command Line Options
When loading MAGIC you can optionally specify one or more command line
options in the following format:
MAGIC /Option /Option<Enter>
The following is a list of MAGic and MAGic Deluxe command line options:
/? The /? option will display MAGic's Help screen.
MAGic / MAGic Deluxe User's Guide Rev. 1.32 Page 3
/B Load with BIG cursor support
If this option is specified, MAGic will load with the BIG cursor feature
turned on. If MAGic is already loaded, the following commands can be used
to enable and disbale the BIG cursor facility:
MAGIC [= Enables the BIG cursor
MAGIC [- Disables the BIG cursor
/Mn Load Magnified
The /Mn option instructs MAGic to load into memory and automatically invoke
the 1.2, 1.4 or 2x magnification modes. Specify /M1 for 1.4x (or 1.2x see
page 28) magnification. If just /M (and no number) is specified, 2x
magnification is assumed.
MAGic Deluxe users can specify 1,2,4,6,8, 9 or 0 for 1.4, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 12x
respectively. For instance, /M4 will load MAGic Deluxe in 4x magnification.
If no number is specified, MAGic Deluxe will load in the 2x mode.
More Options
MAGic and MAGic Deluxe include additional technical options for configuration,
such as monitor types and mouse operation. For a complete list refer to
Appendix A (page 27).

Unloading MAGic
To unload MAGic from memory, input the following command from the DOS prompt:
MAGIC /U
Note that if any other memory resident program(s) were loaded after MAGic,
you will not be able to unload MAGic until you unload the other program(s).
Additionally, the DEMO version of MAGic can only be unloaded by re-booting
your PC!
MAGic / MAGic Deluxe User's Guide Rev. 1.32 Page 5
MAGic Operation
MAGic is EXTREMELY easy to use! Once MAGic has been loaded, it resides in
the background on your PC until you press one of its hot-keys. The remainder
of this section discusses MAGic's operation.
Magnification On/Off
MAGIC provides both type-thru and command mode magnification. The following
describes the type-thru operation. The command mode operation is discussed
later in this section. The following functionally identical hot-keys are
used to toggle on/off magnification in the type-thru mode:
<Alt-Spacebar> or <Alt-NumPad-5>
NOTE: The hot-keys can be assigned to <Ctrl-Spacebar> & <Ctrl NumPad-5> by
using the /C command line option.
Also, insure that <Num-Lock> is not on when using the <NumPad-5> key.
Pressing either of these keys while in standard video mode will magnify the
screen. If you are already in the magnification mode, pressing one of these
keys will return the PC screen to the standard size.
MAGic / MAGic Deluxe User's Guide Rev. 1.32 Page 6
Magnification Sizes -MAGic provides 1.2, 1.4 and 2x text magnification &
2x graphics magnification. MAGic Deluxe provides additional large text
magnification sizes using our Smooth fonts.
Note that 2x magnification is the only size available for graphics screens
and text resolutions other than 25x80 (the PC standard text size). If you
are in a larger text magnification and change to graphics mode, MAGic Deluxe
will automatically select the 2x magnification for the graphics screen.
MAGic Deluxe will return to the previous magnification size when you return
to the text mode.
Following are the available MAGic and MAGic Deluxe magnification sizes and
their associated hot-keys:
<Left-Alt><1> 1.2x or 1.4x see page 28
<Left-Alt><2> 2x
Following are the additional MAGic Deluxe magnification sizes and their associated hot-keys:
<Left-Alt><4> 4x
<Left-Alt><6> 6x
<Left-Alt><8> 8x
<Left-Alt><9> 12x
MAGic / MAGic Deluxe User's Guide Rev. 1.32 Page 7
Moving Around the Screen
The larger the magnification size, the more you will want to master these
facilities. MAGic provides 2 basic methods of moving around the screen:
on-line and off-line tracking. The following describes both modes of operation:
On-Line Tracking
MAGic automatically follows your cursor movement, on-screen attribute changes
(i.e. color changes) and mouse movement, as you work within text based
application programs. Additionally, it follows the mouse movement in graphics
applications.
Off-line tracking
MAGic's off-line tracking facility lets you move around the screen without
effecting your foreground application program. MAGic provides 4 off-line
methods of moving around the screen:
1 Using cursor keys while in command mode,
2 Using <Shift-cursor keys>,
3 Pressing <Left-Alt> while moving a mouse,
4 Setting and jumping to bookmarks,
5 Smooth scroll panning and
6 Via the screen locator (MAGic deluxe only)
MAGic / MAGic Deluxe User's Guide Rev. 1.32 Page 8
The following describes the operation of these features:
<Shift up/down arrows> Move to the previous/next line.
<Shift left/right arrows> Move to the previous/next column.
<Shift-PgUp/Dn> Move to the first/Last line in the current column.
<Shift-Home> Move to the first column in the current line.
<Shift-End> Move to the last column in the current line.
MAGic / MAGic Deluxe User's Guide Rev. 1.32 Page 9
Magnification Locator Display
MAGic Deluxe's magnification locator displays a different background "block"
to indicate the location of the screen which is currently being magnified.
The following command key will toggle on/off the mag. locator display:
<Left-Alt><Grey-Delete>
While in the command mode, it is not necessary to press the <Alt> key.
You may change the color of the locator box by going to Command-Mode and by
pressing the L key until the desired color is displayed.
NOTE: The locator box is available in the stacked mode but NOT in fonts
under 4x magnification.
<Alt><Insert> Enable the Non-Magnified Locator Display in any mode.
You may then move around the screen with the arrow keys and return to the
magnified mode by hitting the <Insert> key again. The color of the locator
is set in the above steps.
MAGic / MAGic Deluxe User's Guide Rev. 1.32 Page 10
Bookmarks
MAGic Deluxe provides 10 user assignable bookmarks. This feature lets you mark
up to 10 screen locations for future access via a single key-stroke. This
feature is useful for quickly navigating around the screen, such as jumping
between cells in a spread sheet.
Setting a bookmark
To set a bookmark, locate the screen to the desired location and hold down
the <Left-Ctrl><Left-Shift> and a number between 0-9. For instance, the
following would set bookmark #1:
<Left-Ctrl><Left-Shift><1>
Moving to a bookmark
To instantly reposition the screen to a previously set bookmark, hold down
<Left-Ctrl> and press the associated bookmark number. For example, to
reposition to bookmark #1, input the following:
<Left-Ctrl><1>
MAGic / MAGic Deluxe User's Guide Rev. 1.32 Page 11
Box and Stacked Modes
MAGic provides 2 basic modes of magnified screen display: Box and Stacked.
In Box mode, MAGic displays a partial window into your PC's displays. In 2x
mode, the display is 14 lines by 40 columns (approximately 1/4 of the PC's
full screen).
In Stacked mode, characters on the current line which are outside the display
are "wrapped-around" to the next line. While in column one and running in
2x magnification, the first 40 characters of the PC's 80 column display will
be displayed just above the second 40 columns. In this mode, 14 lines are
used to display 7 lines of 80 column information.
The Stacked mode is a useful way to read existing text without the need of
panning around the screen. To toggle between Box and Stacked display modes,
press:
<Shift-NumPad><+> This is the gray + key on the numeric keypad.
NOTE: While in MAGic's COMMAND mode, it is only necessary to press the <+>
key. Also, each time it is invoked, MAGic defaults to its box mode.
MAGic / MAGic Deluxe User's Guide Rev. 1.32 Page 12
BIG Cursor
MAGic and MAGic Deluxe provide a BIG cursor feature. This means that
regardless of what your application program sets the cursor to, it will
be automatically reset to be an easy to find block cursor. The big cursor
feature works in all magnification modes. The Big cursor is controlled
with the following hot-keys:
<Atl><=> Turn ON BIG cursor
<Atl><-> Turn OFF BIG cursor
NOTE: While running in command mode, the <Alt> key is not required when
toggling the BIG cursor on/off.
For information on enabling/disabling the BIG cursor feature via MAGic
command line options, refer to page .
MAGic / MAGic Deluxe User's Guide Rev. 1.32 Page 13
Panning Mode Operation
When panning mode is initiated, MAGic starts a smooth left to right panning
motion. When the far right hand side is reached, MAGic moves to the left
column one line down. Panning will continue until it reaches the end of the
last line.
Note that MAGic's automatic screen panning is only available while in the
Command mode. The following command keys are available while in the command:
<Spacebar> or <p> Start MAGic's smooth panning Mode
<arrows> Pan left, up, down or right.
<PgUp> Pan up/right
<PgUp> Pan down/right
<Home> Pan up/left
& <End> Pan down/left
<Spacebar> While panning, these keys will instruct
or </> MAGic to return to the command mode.
<Enter> Resume continuous scanning. If it is already scanning,
the screen is moved up and scan restarts from the left.
<S> SLOW down the panning speed.
<F> Make the panning FASTER.
MAGic / MAGic Deluxe User's Guide Rev. 1.32 Page 14
Mouse Operation
If your application program uses the mouse, MAGic will attempt to center the
screen around the mouse cursor as you move around the screen. Additionally,
mouse users can also use the following facilities:
<Left-Alt> + mouse movement Move around the screen, w/o effecting
your foreground application program.
<Left-Alt> + the Left mouse button Toggles magnification on/off.
<Left-Alt> + the Right mouse button Toggles between stacked and
box display modes.
MAGic supports a "Mouse Exclusive" mode. When this mode is specified, mouse
movement is used to move MAGic around the screen and DOES NOT pass the mouse
movement along to your foreground application program. While in MAGic's
command mode, press X to toggle the mouse exclusive mode on/off. Note that
you can use the /MX command line option to load MAGic with this mode enabled.
If MAGic is already loaded, you can enable the exclusive mode with the [X
command line option.
MAGic / MAGic Deluxe User's Guide Rev. 1.32 Page 15
Command Mode
MAGic provides a powerful command mode. The command mode provides some
special MAGic command keys, plus it is useful for browsing around the screen
without needing to hold down the <Shift> key. Since some programs (such as
Word Perfect) do not let MAGic receive the <Shift-Cursor keys>, you may find
it is necessary to move to the command mode while browsing.
<up/down arrows> Move to the previous/next line.
<left/right arrows> Move to the previous/next column.
<PgUp> Move to the first line in the current column.
<PgDn> Move to the last line in the current column.
<Home> Move to the first column in the current line.
<End> Move to the last column in the current line.
<Tab> Move horizontally in increments of 1/2 mag. screen.
<Shift-TAB> Ditto above but moves in reverse.
<,> or <.> Toggle forward or backward through the set bookmarks.
MAGic / MAGic Deluxe User's Guide Rev. 1.32 Page 16
In addition to the browsing command keys, the command mode also provides the
following advanced command options:
<Enter> Type-thru mode @ cursor
Enter type-thru mode at the cursor.
<Ins> Type-thru @ current location
Enter type-thru mode at the current screen location.
<NumPad +> Stacked/Box modes
This toggles between the stacked and box modes.
For more information, please refer to page 11.
I Track invisible cursor
This option toggles the state of MAGic's hidden cursor tracking. Some
programs use an invisible cursor. Even though you cannot see this cursor,
MAGic can. Normally, MAGic WILL NOT track invisible cursors. This command
is used to enable/disable the tracking of an invisible cursor. Pressing <I>
once will disable this tracking; pressing it a second time enables this
tracking.
MAGic / MAGic Deluxe User's Guide Rev. 1.32 Page 17
I x Ignore Tracking
This command lets you disable one of the following tracking facilities:
C Cursor
B Cursor at the bottom line
T Cursor at the top line
I Invisible cursor
A Attributes
M Invisible mouse cursor
To selectively disable any of the automatic tracking features while MAGic is
already loaded, you can issue the following command line option: MAGIC [x
Where x is C, B, T, I, A or M (as described above). To once again enable the
tracking options, issue the following command: MAGIC [ ]
We recommend that Word Perfect users, load WP via a batch file which first
turns off MAGic's attribute tracking, then loads WP and when you exit from
WP, turns attribute tracking back on. The following commands would accomplish
this:
MAGIC [A
WP
MAGIC [ ]
MAGic / MAGic Deluxe User's Guide Rev. 1.32 Page 18
M Track Invisible Mouse cursor
As with the invisible cursor, MAGic is able to track an invisible mouse.
This command is used to enable/disable the tracking of an invisible mouse
cursor. Normally, MAGic DOES track invisible mouse cursors. Pressing <M>
once will enable this tracking; pressing it a second time will disable this
tracking.
<Ctrl-Arrows> Adjust screen bias
This command adjusts the bias of the upper left corner. This is useful for
some graphics programs.
Command Mode Mouse Control
When in the command mode, the mouse functions as follows:
Mouse movement Move around the screen.
Left mouse button Invokes MAGic's type-thru mode.
Right mouse button Toggles between stacked and box modes.
MAGic / MAGic Deluxe User's Guide Rev. 1.32 Page 19
Windows
MAGic provides 2x magnification for all modes of operation in Windows 3.x
(and 2.x).
If you told the INSTALL program that you were running Windows, it configures
Windows to automatically load WINMAGIC.EXE or WIN2MAG.EXE (Windows 3 or 2
respectively) each time Windows is loaded.
If you did not tell INSTALL that you are running Windows, you can manually
copy one of the above programs to your windows directory and add the program
name to the "LOAD =" line in your WIN.INI file. For more information on
Windows installation, refer to page 23 for Windows installation directions.
Either of the following will toggle between magnified and non-magnified modes:
Press the left <Ctrl> and <Shift> keys
or
Double click on the desktop MAGic icon.

In Case of Difficulties
MAGic has been designed to be as flexible as possible and to co-exist with
most PC programs. If, however, you should find that you have difficulty
getting MAGic to function properly in your environment, please contact MSI
or an authorized distributor directly to report any incompatibilities. We
will be happy to look into them for you. Thank you for purchasing a
Microsystems Software product. We hope you enjoy MAGic!

Adapted access products such as Dragon DictateTM and IntroVoiceTM can toggle
MAGic and MAGic Deluxe's magnification mode by sending the following command
to the keyboard:
<Alt><F7> For Dragon Dictate
or <Ctrl><Alt><F7> For HandiKEY
NOTE: This command can only be sent by the adapted access program.
It CAN NOT be input from the keyboard!
MAGic and MAGic Deluxe include the ability to track the "reading" cursor in
IBM's Screen ReaderTM.

Dragon Dictate / Voice-Type Considerations
When using MAGic with the Dragon Dictate, you MUST load MAGic after Dragon
Dictate is loaded and you will need to create Dragon Dictate "invisible"
macros to turn magnification on and off. Following is the proper macro
format for magnification control:
MAGON should contain {Alt-7}Mx{Enter} (where x is the desired magnification
size: 2, 4, 6, 8 or 12).
MAGOFF should contain {Alt-7}{Esc}.
Finally, As of this writing, there is a problem in the Dragon Dictate TSR
and MSI has created a 128 byte program called DRAGFIX.COM Load this program
BEFORE the Dragon TSR and load the MAGIC.EXE Program after the Dragon TSR.
Screen Reader & Voice-Type are TM's of International Business Machines,
IntroVoice is a TM of Voice Connection and Dragon Dictate is a TM of Dragon
Systems, Inc.

Additional Information & Procedures -The following features of MAGic & MAGic
Deluxe enhance their operation with Word-Perfect 5.0 & 5.1, IBM's new Voice-
Type and Dragon Dictate input systems.
Additional Command-Line Switches
/H Set High-Intensity Monochrome Mode. This is the same as entering
Command-Mode with the <Num-Pad 5> and hitting an <H> In this mode,
letters are bright-white on a black background.
/VT Set Voice-Type / Dragon Dictate Tracking Mode. In this mode, MAGic
will always provide at least 14 characters to the right of the cursor
and 6 lines below the cursor to allow visibility of the "Drop Boxes".
You should configure Voice Type to drop the boxes at the DOS cursor.
Note: Most IBM monitors also require /MT1 (non-multisync) on the
Command-Line for proper operation at 1.2X Magnification.

The Program Loading Order in your AUTOEXEC.BAT should be as follows:
DRAGFIX prohibit Int-9 re-entrancy fix (100-byte TSR)
VT Voice-Type TSR
MAGIC /MT1 /VT MAGic TSR
Voice-Type Macros to control MAGic:
[Make it Big] {Alt-7}m1{Enter} Magnify 1.2 X
[Make it Bigger] {Alt-7}m2{Enter} Magnify 2.0 X
[Make it Small] {Alt-7}{Esc} Magnify 1.0 X
1) These macros should also have Punctuation set to Invisible
2) To input {Esc} or {Enter} hit <Ctrl-Enter> and then <Esc> or <Enter>

Additional Command-Mode Functions:
Note: Remember that you get into Command-Mode with <Num-Pad 5> (making sure
that the Num Lock is OFF)
<R> Show the Reveal Code equivalent to the current cursor position in
the lower half of the screen (13 lines below) and then exit Command
-Mode to Type-Thru Mode. MAGic will continue tracking in the Reveal
Screen until you hit this combination a second time. It will then
return to the original cursor position at the top of the screen.
<S> Pan the Bottom Line (25th) and exit to Type-Thru Mode at the end of
the line. If any key is hit during the panning, the panning will
stop, Type-Thru Mode is entered, and the key is passed on to the
application. In 2x mode, you will also see all the word choices as
well. In higher magnifications, you will need to set BookMarks at each
of the suggestion columns to review these. When using our HandiWORD
word-prediction, this option will pan the choices, allow you to im-
mediately select the word choice (by number) and position you to type
the next character. Use the <Shift> key to terminate the panning prior
to the end of line if necessary.
MAGic / MAGic Deluxe User's Guide Rev. 1.32 Page 38
<A> Go to the 1st Attribute (Background Color) Change position on the
screen. Again this reverts to Type-Thru Mode after typing the <A>.
In the case of Word-Perfect in spell-check mode, this would be the
suspect word. You can return to the DOS cursor at any time with the
<5><Enter> sequence.
<Z> Enable/Disable Cursor Tracking and then exit Command-Mode. Faster
equivilent to <5><I><C><Enter>. Useful for moving through pages of
mispelled words.
Misc. Additions: In Non-Magnified Mode, you may now hit <Alt><Insert> to
enable the MAGic Locator Display and move it around the
screen with the mouse as well as the <Arrow Keys>.
